Non-Government Education Reflecting Diversity: Union Culture and Muslim Schools

The IEU has produced a brochure ‘Non-Government Education Reflecting Diversity, Union Culture and Muslim Schools', which addresses some commonly held stereotypes about Muslim schools.

The brochure contains interviews with educators and union representatives at Muslim schools, such as Wassim Saad, Deputy Principal of Al Amanah Islamic College in Bankstown, who is quoted as saying: “Some people think of poor conditions or that we’re on some different award. But that’s just stereotyping and prejudice”.

“These schools are vital to build understanding in the community,” NSW/ACT IEU General Secretary Dick Shearman said.

“NSW Muslim schools are diverse and demand for places is increasing. They provide frequent opportunities for people of many backgrounds to come together and learn from each other through cultural exchange programs, interfaith days and diversity days,’’ Mr Shearman said.

“In order to develop harmony in our communities, we must ensure there is continued non-discriminatory government support for these schools,” he said.
