Transition To A Federal IR System

Legislation went through NSW Parliament late November 2009 referring all but public sector employees to the federal industrial relations system.

Some of the differences in the federal system will have an impact, and all Catholic and independent schools previously in the State system will be affected (many independent schools and all ACT schools were already in the federal system).

But regardless of sector, the IEU is committed to making the most of the system to ensure that this occurs and we’re confident that hard-won conditions can be maintained.

In 2010, the IEU is campaigning to ensure current wages and conditions are protected throughout this process. In the case of Catholic schools, it will be essential to maintain the gains achieved in current awards and agreements.

Similarly, agreements need to be secured for independent schools currently in the state system. Agreements will also be renegotiated for those independent schools that were already in the federal system under WorkChoices. At particular risk are those independent schools with no current agreement.

While the Union is confident that we can work effectively in this ‘bargaining’ format, it has never been more important to have strong Union membership in each school.
