Member Benefits

There are many benefits of being an IEU member. As well as being entitled to the support of the union on industrial matters, advice on employment issues and the provision of union training our members have access to a range of other services.

Professional Representation
The IEU represents the professional interests and concerns of all members at a state and national level, whether they work in a school, early childhood service, English college, business college or other non-government educational institution. The IEU also provides a range of services to members, which are outlined in this booklet. Any member with a problem or enquiry should seek immediate assistance from the IEU. Our officers are available to meet personally with members, at the IEU office or at their workplace by appointment. Like any union, the IEU exists to protect and advance its members' interests. Every IEU member is entitled to the support of the union on any industrial or professional matter. IEU officers provide information, advice and representation on all issues affecting employment and working conditions, from dismissals through to salary and payment matters, leave, legal liability and the general rights and responsibilities of teachers and school staff, within the school, centre or college environment. As well as being entitled to the support of the union on industrial matters, advice on employment issues and the provision of union training our members have access to a range of other services which are set out below. Research grants
The IEU offers research grants each year to assist members with their own research on educational issues. The Col Aitkin Education Support Grant provides a grant to a maximum of $3,000 and applications are called for each year in Newsmonth. Retired members association Retired members are eligible to join the Retired Members' Association. Meetings are held three times per year ending with a Christmas social function.

Welfare Rights Centre
Security law and its administration can provide assistance to members in the complex area of social security entitlements. These include:
- Unemployment Benefits
- Family Allowance
- Sickness Allowance
- Disability Support Pension
- Parenting Allowance, and other Social Security Payments
The difficulty lies in unravelling entitlements and how they interact with each other. The Welfare Rights Centre is there to assist and support members at a time when their need is greatest. Union training
The IEU, through its union training program, provides one day and longer union training courses for members with particular emphasis on training chapter representatives. Paid release is available for representatives attending designated courses. read more |

Non-member policy
No assistance or advice will be given to non-members.
No assistance will be given to new members on serious matters relating to their employment which arose prior to joining. New members who join at the appropriate rate of subscription should be advised of the above and of their right to place their problem in writing before the Executive. |
