Support Staff

Support staff are the key to keeping our education system functioning, and at the Independent Education Union NSW/ACT, we stand proudly alongside you.

Through every stage of your career, the IEU is here for you.

The IEU represents administrative, learning support, wellbeing staff, maintenance and operational staff in non-government schools, colleges and other educational institutions (except those employed in early childhood services) throughout NSW and the ACT.

Support staff is an all-inclusive term that includes school secretaries and office staff, teachers’ aides, laboratory and library assistants, canteen staff, nurses, counsellors, boarding supervisors, bus drivers, maintenance workers, groundskeepers, and many other non-teaching employees working in the non-government education sector.

We have achieved regular wage increases for support staff comparable with support staff in government schools and have constantly sought to improve wages and working conditions for support staff as well as greater job security.

The IEU’s School Support Staff Advisory Committee and a dedicated support staff Vice President, Kylie Booth-Martinez, who is a member of the IEUA NSW/ACT Branch Executive, strengthen support staff participation within the IEU.

The School Support Staff Advisory Committee is an ad-hoc committee with up to seven members from various classifications and sectors, including clerical employees, school assistants, boarding house staff, and grounds and maintenance staff.  It assists the IEU Executive and Officers in addressing the industrial and professional needs of our non-teacher members.

We have a dedicated Support Staff Facebook group and regularly publish Gaining Ground, an eNewsletter sent to our support staff members.
