    The IEU shares the concerns of our members and the broader community around the expanding COVID-19 clusters in schools. It is imperative that non-government school employers adhere to COVID-safe plans and practices. Extra-curricular activities should be curtailed.

    IEU echoes the NSW Premier’s warning to non-government school employers that they need to be adhering to COVID-safe plans, following recent outbreaks of cases in schools around Sydney and Newcastle.

  • Newcastle schools and COVID-19 closures

    The IEU understands two Newcastle schools, St Pius X, Adamstown, and St Francis Xavier, Hamilton, are now closed for deep cleaning following confirmed COVID-19 cases among students. Between both schools, the union has in excess of 220 members.

  • Masks in schools

    The current NSW Health advice regarding face masks does not require their use however, it is recommended in certain circumstances. NSW state school principals have been instructed to allow teachers to wear masks in the classroom if they wish, and it is the IEU’s expectation that our members be supported to do so as well.

    Last week Catholic Schools NSW released updated COVID-19 advice for schools for the commencement of Term 3. This information is to be shared with all school staff. The IEU advises our members to read through the factsheets provided to ensure that they are familiar with these guidelines and the way in which these changes will affect you, both individually and as a school community.

    The media yesterday reported two Sydney school closures, Waverley and Moriah Colleges, due to confirmed coronavirus cases amongst the student cohort. Instances like these will only increase as students increasingly make their way back into classrooms, and regular school operations resume.
