Boys Will Be Boys?

In 2017 a small group of women at Edmund Rice College, with the approval of the principal, initiated a meeting of concerned female staff. These women represented teaching, administrative and support staff, who wished to identify what they believed to be negative and gender based behaviours exhibited by the boys. At this initial meeting, women were invited to record in writing the nature of their experiences.

This was to be the foundation for a constructive and inclusive approach under the direction of the leadership of the school, to address the problems raised. Whereas the initial group gathered under the logo Women@ERC, this quickly transformed to a whole school approach addressing a broader spectrum of gender related issues. The new logo Inclusivity Matters@ERC was adopted. By chance, this grassroots development coincided with EREA publishing the document Live Life to the Full which promotes explicit inclusivity of LGBTQI+ identifying people.

Over the 2 years since its inception, this gender initiative has led to a variety of positive achievements at the College. Common to other initiatives questioning the status quo and calling for change, it has also experienced its challenges and remains a vital work in progress.

During this presentation Lourdes Ndaira and Barbara Kinnane will provide you with ways to identify, discuss and engage colleagues in addressing a broad spectrum of gender based concerns.

Completing Women's Forum - Boys will be boys will contribute 1 hour and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 4.4.2 and 7.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
