Positive changes are starting to happen for employees on the Modern Award.
Under the current regime, the Fair Work Commission is empowered to review all Modern Awards every four years. This process started in 2014 and is so slow and cumbersome, that we are already at the next four year mark!
Nevertheless, we are starting to see that some significant changes will be flowed through to employees reliant on the Modern Award system (nearly all employees in the post secondary college sector).
These changes include a casual conversion clause (under which long term casuals will be able to elect to convert their employment status from casual to permanent), and access to unpaid domestic violence leave (under which employees will be able to take approved time off to deal with matters arising from episodes of domestic violence).
