Supporting the independent education community

No 'them and us'

New principal Belinda Burton said serving as an IEU Rep for more than 20 years has been no impediment to her promotion.

Belinda was long term Rep at St Mary’s Primary School in Armidale until she took an acting principal position at St Patrick’s Primary School Walcha 12 months ago.

At the end of last year she became permanent principal at the small country school with 71 students.

She is no longer IEU Rep but is still attending IEU Council as a North West Branch delegate until her term expires.

"The IEU Rep and principal are not in opposition. “Everyone is working in the best interests of staff and students. There’s no ‘them and us’ situation.

“All principals should join. We live in challenging times so why wouldn’t you want someone who can support you and provide you with protection and advice?

“With growing accountabilities and pressures on principals, it is important to have the Union going in to bat for all of us, for better working conditions, representation on the many associations, committees and departments that influence education today.”
