Information for members affected by the bushfire emergency

The Union is aware that a number of members have been severely affected by the NSW bush fires, particularly on the South Coast and in the Snowy Mountains and nearby areas.  Some IEU members have lost their homes as a result of the bush fires.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Union by phone 1800 467 943 (toll free for country members) or 8202 8900 or email to ieu@ieu.asn.au if

  1. you have questions about your entitlements at work OR
  2. because you have been financially impacted by the fires and will have trouble paying your Union fees.

Some members employed in childcare centres may have difficulties at work now if their centre has closed as a result of the fires or because their own circumstances make it hard to attend work.  Other members may anticipate problems when their school or preschool resumes in late January.

The Union has been in contact with Catholic Education Archdiocese of Canberra & Goulburn (CE) and we understand that at this stage it is anticipated all CE schools will re-open at the beginning of Term 1.  We have also been advised by the Association of Independent Schools (AIS) that independent schools in bush fire affected areas will re-open, although some have suffered damage.   If members feel they may be unable to return to work because of the impact of the fires please discuss this with your Principal and let the Union know of any problems. We have been in contact with the employers and we will be continuing these discussions.

Members may also wish to contact the federal government for assistance. For more information call the disaster relief hotline at 1802266 or visit their website.
