COVID-19 video update for early childhood teachers

The IEU spoke with Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan late yesterday afternoon and again earlier today. The union raised key issues impacting early childhood members that we want the federal government to address immediately.


Where possible, options for working at home should be considered for vulnerable workers. This includes pregnant women, those with underlying health conditions, those over 60 years of age and those living with a vulnerable person, such as an elderly parent.


Earlier this week it was agreed to maintain “Starting Strong” funding for community-based preschools and mobiles for 2020 regardless of any decline in enrolments. It is our understanding that if a service is required to close on health grounds before the holidays, it will be able to request additional funds. Members are encouraged to watch the webinar by Department of Education at 12.30 on Friday 27 March.

We will continue working with the government to ensure employee entitlements are maintained during this difficult period.


While centres remain open, they must comply with strict safety guidelines to manage physical distancing and other hygiene matters as best they can.


The minister has promised to get back to the union today and we anticipate a public announcement on these matters. We expect to be involved in ongoing decision making and keep our members at the centre of this conversation.
