COVID-19 Update - You don't need to ask, just wear a mask
Hello, I’m Mark Northam, the Secretary of the Independent Education Union NSW and ACT Branch. I’m here for another COVID-19 update for our members. I want to let you know the lay of the land and what your union has been doing for you during this time.
The NSW government has responded to our calls, and are developing a ‘Reset for Term 3 that will constitute new strengthened guidance for schools. The relevant parties to any ‘reset’ in schools would of course be the department of health, school employers, students, and staff. The IEU is the industrial representative of staff working on the frontline in non-government schools, and as such MUST have a seat at the table.
The union has called on the state government to formally recommend that face masks be worn within school settings, by both staff and senior students. Our message to our members is that you should feel empowered to wear a mask within a school setting, including the classroom, effective immediately. You don’t need to ask, just wear a mask.
The IEU and the NSW Government are of common mind that schools must adhere to COVID-safe plans, and curtail extra-curricular activities that present an increased transmission risk.
We are aware of heightened anxiety among our members around such practices.
The union would find it unacceptable if any of our members were asked to expose themselves needlessly to additional risk by participating in such activities.
If your workplace is failing to adhere to COVID-safe protocols, speak up and your union will support you 100%.
Our members across NSW and the ACT are in workplaces on the frontline of this pandemic response. Workplace transmission requires a workplace response, and the union must be part of the reset.
Thank you, stay safe, we are all in this together.
