Experienced Teacher applications in independent schools

New optional earlier submission date of 28 October 2020

IEU members in Association of Independent Schools (AIS) schools applying for Band 3 Experienced Teacher status would be aware that the submission date for Experienced Teacher portfolios was delayed because of COVID-19.  The original filing date of 4th September 2020 was rescheduled to 11th December 2020. The filing date was delayed by the Independent Schools Teacher Accreditation Authority (ISTAA) because of concern that teachers who were teaching remotely might have trouble preparing the portfolio required as part of the Band 3 application process.

However, this has the effect that teachers will miss the February 2021 deadline for achieving the Band 3 Experienced Teacher pay rise in 2021 under the Standards Model and Hybrid Model Multi-Enterprise Agreements. Although schools may agree to pay teachers the Band 3 pay rate from the date they achieve Experienced Teacher, they are not required to pay the increase until February 2022 under the current wording of the Multi-Enterprise Agreements. The union has complained about the potential delay in payment to the Association of Independent Schools.

In response, the Independent Schools Teacher Accreditation Authority (ISTAA) has agreed to offer an optional earlier submission date of 28th October 2020.

We have also been advised directly that some schools will backpay teachers to February 2021 even if their Experienced Teacher application is not approved until May 2021, because of the later submission date due to the COVID - 19 delay. You may wish to check with your school on this.

If your school does not agree to backpay the Band 3 rate from February 2021 if you lodge your portfolio in December 2020, you may wish to lodge the portfolio by 28th October 2020 in order to secure Band 3 payment for 2021.

Please notify ISTAA by 14th October if you intend to submit by 28th October 2020. Applicants will be notified of their results in December and If additional evidence is required this will need to be submitted by 15th January 2021.

Teachers are still able to submit by 11th December 2020 and have their portfolios assessed in April 2021.

Do not hesitate to ring the Union if you have any queries.
