NewsExtra: Special IEU update for NSW Early Childhood Teachers

After running an eight-year-long case in the Fair Work Commission, the union has won significant pay increases and improved conditions for members covered by the Education Services (Teachers) Award 2020 (“the modern award”).

Pay increases and a new classification structure

From the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2022, members covered by the modern award will receive additional increases ranging from 3.3 percent to 13.6 percent.

These increases will be delivered through a new five-level classification structure, based on the accreditation level of a teacher and years of service at a Proficient level.

This means the faster a graduate teacher achieves Proficient Teacher accreditation, the faster they will access higher paying classification levels.

The new classification structure also creates a new, higher level for teachers who are accredited as Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher.

New Educational Leader’s allowance and a boost to Directors' allowances

An educational leader’s allowance of $3845.14 per annum will also introduced from 1 January 2022 and will be paid to any teacher (including directors) who are designated under the National Regulations as an educational leader.

As a consequence of the new classification structure directors will also receive a 13.6 percent increase in the director’s allowance.

Further information

The new modern award, when published, will explain how you transition to the new classification structure and what your new rate of pay will be. Once the new modern award is published, we will email a copy to all IEU members covered by it.

Members are urged to check that they are being paid correctly in the new year and to call the union office if they need any assistance. The union is only able to assist members with queries about their classification or teacher accreditation. Please encourage any colleagues who have not yet joined the union to do so.
