Principals’ Sub Branch update: February 2022
The IEU Principals’ Sub Branch meeting via Zoom on 19 February 2022.
It was great to welcome familiar faces and those who were joining us for the first time. The update on the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD), NESA and PD issues from IEU Professional Officer Veronica Yewdall was much appreciated.
Congratulations to the Principals’ Sub Branch leadership group who were re-elected and to those who volunteered to be part of the Principals’ Sub Branch committee/reference group. (More volunteers are welcome.)
Noeleen O’Neill was re-elected president, Kathy Neely is vice president, and Jude Ryan and Des Fox as joint secretaries.
Volunteers for the committee include Peter Meers, Anthony Weir, Alex Wharton, Cathy Young, Silvana Rossetti, Leah Taylor and Niamh Marzol.
Meeting dates for the year ahead are proposed for 7 May, 6 August, 5 November and 18 February in 2023. COVID permitting, we hope these meetings will be held at the IEU’s Parramatta office with a Zoom option available.
Diocesan/sector updates are a vital part of our meetings, and this information enables our union to be better aware of key issues and to provide appropriate support for principal members.
The IEU thanks principals in the Catholic systemic sector for their input into the enterprise agreement (EA) claim and formal bargaining has now commenced.
As well as enhancing remuneration and improving a range of working conditions, addressing staff shortages is a significant aspect of the union’s claim. These issues have been highlighted in the recent release of the 2021 data from the Australian Principal Occupational Health and Wellbeing Survey.
The IEU is engaging with Catholic Employment Relations (CER) regarding the principals’ EA for 10 NSW/ACT dioceses and with Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) about the Sydney principals’ EA. (The first bargaining meeting with Sydney was on 8 March and the IEU notes that SCS has issued an Enterprise Agreement Principals’ Consultation Survey to principals in the Archdiocese.)
IEU Council on 19 March focused on the Catholic systemic enterprise agreement negotiations for support staff, teachers and principals and endorsed the campaign to "Hear Our Voice".
Very best wishes as you continue to navigate the challenges of COVID and the extreme weather conditions in some areas.
Pam Smith
Assistant Secretary/Principals’ Organiser
