Rallies Thursday 30 June 2022

Dear IEU Member

I am writing to you about the stop work rallies and marches that have been called by the IEU for Thursday 30 June. The union has called on teachers and support staff members in Catholic systemic schools in NSW and the ACT to stop work on Thursday. Members in over 560 schools have voted to take protected action in formal protected action ballots.

However, other members may wish to attend the rallies to show solidarity with their colleagues in Catholic schools. Members who are not rostered to work on that day and retired and student members are encouraged to attend.

The decision to take stop work action was made after a historic joint meeting between the executives of the NSW Teachers Federation and the IEUA (NSW/ACT). Members of both unions will rally in Macquarie Street in Sydney, as well as in regional locations across NSW and the ACT (these locations are on the union website.)

The joint action is in response to the failure of the NSW Government to stop the decline in real wages for public sector workers and address the crisis in teaching. This crisis in teaching extends across both government and non-government schools in NSW and the ACT. The failure to address the decline in real wages and shortages has a direct impact on our current negotiations with Catholic employers, including Catholic independent employers, and in the longer term will limit pay outcomes in other independent schools.

We would love to see you if you can make it. You may wish to wear yellow or pick up a yellow IEU T-shirt at the rally.
