Future Perfect: Bargaining update

Your union continues to seek improvements on behalf of members in the sector.

The most prominent area we do this is via the enterprise bargaining process. Bargaining at many schools has fallen into a slump over the last two years, but things are picking up now that the recovery is underway.

Earlier this year, IEU members at UTS College (formerly known as Insearch) approved a two-year agreement, with pay rises of 2.5% per annum, while an agreement in principle has been reached at WSU The College, where pay rises for 2022 will be 4%, with 3% or better in the next two years.

Bargaining is progressing well at UoW College (pay rises are likely to be comparable to the agreements mentioned above), and bargaining will soon commence at Taylors College, Navitas, and hopefully a college near you!

Your union has also fought off an attempt by EF English to terminate their agreement. The college has made two applications to the Fair Work Commission (FWC) to abolish their agreement (which provides pay and conditions superior to the award), but following submissions from the IEU, the FWC has rejected the college’s two applications, and so the agreement remains in place. Your union has written to the college to commence bargaining to renew the existing agreement.

Enterprise bargaining is governed by the ‘good faith bargaining’ provisions of the Fair Work Act, and agreements must contain wages and conditions which are superior to the relevant award. To find out how this might work at your college, contact the IEU.
