Position vacant: IEU Professional Engagement/Organiser - Ultimo, Sydney

 

The IEU is seeking applications from enthusiastic and dynamic education professionals to join our IEU Ultimo office.  

 

The position is suitable for teachers or other education professionals who have extensive knowledge of the education sector.  

 

A demonstrated history of union involvement and experience as a primary teacher, or demonstrated familiarity with the primary curriculum, is highly desirable.  

 

The commencement date is negotiable, however, commencement in Term 2 is preferred.  

This role will consist of working as part of the Professional Engagement team and working with IEU members as an Organiser.  

 

Professional Engagement role 

  • Assisting officers and other staff to understand key issues in the educational agenda, with a focus on workload issues for primary teachers, and providing support to members. 
  • Assisting in the development of union policies and campaigns related to educational issues.
  • Advising and assisting members with individual accreditation matters 
  • Developing resources for members related to educational issues and workload.
  • Hosting some professional development from time to time and developing professional learning courses. Some PD may be outside normal working hours. 

 

Organiser role 

  • Attending at workplaces to meet with members and non-members, implementing IEU campaigns, representing, and supporting members in relation to disputes and problems, and answering member queries. 

 

Candidate Attributes 

 

Ideal candidates will have: 
 

  • Good writing and presentation skills, good inter-personal skills, the capacity to work as part of a team and reasonable IT skills. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the current educational landscape, including current curriculum reform, and the capacity to respond to current education issues.
  • General familiarity with current teacher accreditation/registration policies and practice.  
  • A current driver’s licence is essential.  

 

Conditions 

 

The successful applicant will be appointed under contract by the IEU Executive and will be accountable to the Secretary in the first instance. 

 

Salary will be in accordance with the IEU Officers’ salary scale that has links to Sydney Catholic Schools promotion salary rates, with a maximum salary of close to $145,000.  Starting salary is usually one incremental step on the Officers’ scale above the salary the applicant would earn in 2023. Superannuation is currently 14%.  

 

Officers receive time in lieu of one day per month, additional annual leave, closedown leave over the Christmas period and other conditions in line with or above industry standards.   

 

Officers generally work from 9am-5pm but there is considerable flexibility in working hours.  Attendance at meetings before school and after school outside these hours will be required from time to time.  Occasional weekend and evening work will also be required. Overnight travel may also be necessary on an occasional basis.  

 

A fully - maintained car will be provided for the performance of duties and some limited personal use is permitted.  A c 

 

IEU Officers retain their membership of the union and participate in the IEU Council.
