  • Bushfire crisis - statement and resolutions of the South Coast Labour Council 29 January 2020

    The South Coast Labour Council has adopted a number of resolutions at the first General Meeting of the year in relation to the ongoing bushfire crisis and in particular the continuing humanitarian and economic crisis on the South Coast of NSW. The IEU is an affiliated union of the South Coast Labour Council, and IEU organiser Tina Smith holds the position of president of SCLC.

  • Coronavirus advice

    The outbreak of the Coronavirus in China unfolding over the last few weeks has raised concerns over its potential transmission. The NSW Government has provided advice for schools as a precautionary measure. These, or similar, measures have been adopted by many Catholic and independent schools.

  • Bushfire support for learning communities

    Early learning services and schools can play a critical role in supporting communities to respond and recover from the bushfire crisis, whether they have been directly or indirectly affected by the fires. While the physical impact of the bushfire crisis is obvious, the mental health impact may not be. An online resource pack has been developed to support educators in looking after themselves and the children and young people in their care as they return from holidays.

    The IEU has compiled a list of services and resources available to people affected by the ongoing bushfire disaster. This list is not exhaustive, and further information may continue to be added if appropriate.

    Children attending child care and students in bushfire-declared communities will receive additional mental health support, according to Minister for Education Dan Tehan.

    Community Early Learning Australia has produced a useful article with advice for dealing with the bushfire trauma, including self care for early childhood teachers and addressing the needs of young children who may have experienced trauma.

  • Update - NSW schools and early childhood centres affected by bushfires

    The union has been advised by Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn (CECG) that at least 12 Catholic schools have been affected by bushfire. They are Batehaven, Moruya, Broulee, Bega, Pambula, Bombala, Cooma, Batlow, Adelong. Tumut, Braidwood and Gundagai. Some independent schools and early childhood centres have also been affected, including Scots College, Glengarry campus at Kangaroo Valley.
