  • IEU call for priority vaccination in ACT gains momentum

    Following an open letter from the IEU to ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr on 18 August calling on him to prioritise the vaccination of school and early childhood staff in the ACT, the Principal of St Thomas Aquinas Primary School Canberra, where a COVID-19 infected person was present on 12 August, has added her voice to the demand.

    Across NSW early learning centres and preschools have remained open every day during this current wave of the pandemic. The irony is that for much of this time early childhood workers themselves have not been classified as essential workers and have not been afforded priority access to vaccines.

    A new survey from industry super group HESTA underlines why it is important for early childhood teachers to join the IEU. The survey found that although many early childhood educators (the survey did not distinguish between teachers and educators) were happy with their employer, they were still considering leaving the profession due to low pay.

  • Media Release: Open letter to the ACT Chief Minister: Priority vaccinations for staff in schools and early childhood services

    Our union represents teachers and support staff in the non-government education sector in NSW and the ACT. I am writing concerning today’s announcement of 22 new COVID cases and a total of 67 active COVID cases in the ACT. A number of these cases are associated with school communities, including most recently St Thomas Aquinas Primary School and Holy Spirit Primary School. The union appreciates the efforts the ACT government is making to deal with this crisis, including the lockdown in place until 2 September 2021.

  • Union win: Vaccine priority for all school staff in hotspots

    All school staff and early childhood teachers now have priority vaccination status in the 11 local government areas (LGAs) of concern for COVID-19 in greater Sydney. They are: Bayside, Blacktown, Burwood, Campbelltown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Georges River, Liverpool, Paramatta and Strathfield. Many suburbs around Penrith are also included (see below).
