On 31 July 2025, the Federal Executive of the Independent Education Union of Australia unanimously passed the following resolution:
- Recognises the 80th anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 2025, which caused immense human suffering and long-term environmental devastation;
- Honours the memory of the victims and survivors (hibakusha) of nuclear weapons use and testing, including in Australia, and acknowledges their ongoing advocacy for a world free of nuclear weapons;
- Reaffirms the union’s commitment to peace, justice, and solidarity — values at the heart of our movement — and affirms that peace is union business;
- Endorses the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as a landmark international agreement that outlaws the development, possession, and threat of use of nuclear weapons;
- Calls on the Australian Government to sign and ratify the TPNW as a step toward fulfilling its global disarmament obligations and safeguarding future generations;
- Encourages members to mark Hiroshima and Nagasaki Days in their schools and communities through educational initiatives and peace activities.
The IEU stands in with and proudly supports the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, alongside the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
